Zojila Pass reopens after 32 days, restoring vital lifeline to Ladakh

The Zojila Pass, one of the most strategic and challenging high-altitude routes in the world, has officially reopened after being closed for 32 days due to heavy snowfall caused by a western disturbance. The pass, located in the Himalayas, is critical for the movement of military personnel, essential supplies, and economic activities, as it connects Ladakh with the rest of India through the Kashmir Valley. Its closure significantly impacts the region, as it serves as a vital lifeline for locals and the Indian military.

This year, the pass faced an unusually short but intense closure from February 27 to March 16, caused by a western disturbance. During this period, the region saw heavy snowfall, which rendered the pass impassable. However, Border Roads Organization (BRO) teams worked tirelessly and managed to clear the snow within a record 15 days, from March 17 to March 31. By April 1, traffic movement resumed, and the first convoy was flagged off.

Lt. Gen. Raghu Srinivasan, PVSM, VSM, the Director General of Border Roads, led the reopening ceremony and flagged off the first convoy, commending the dedicated efforts of the BRO teams. Also present was Dr. Mohammad Jaffer Akhoon, Chief Executive Councillor of Kargil, who praised the exemplary work done by BRO, especially its projects like Vijayak and Beacon, which were instrumental in clearing the snow and reopening the pass.

The Zojila Pass holds immense strategic importance as it enables the rapid deployment and sustenance of troops in Ladakh. It also supports the transportation of essential goods, including medical supplies, and facilitates business activities. Before the improved snow-clearing techniques, the pass used to remain closed for up to six months, effectively isolating Ladakh from the rest of India. However, the closure period has steadily reduced, thanks to advancements in technology and faster clearing operations.

While the Zojila Pass is now open, its closure still has significant implications for the region. During the closure, medical evacuations are delayed, businesses face disruptions, and essential supplies are held up. Nonetheless, with the pass open again, the daily lives of locals and the movement of goods and troops will be restored, providing much-needed relief.

The reopening of Zojila Pass is not just a relief for the local population and the military but also a testament to the hard work and resilience of the Border Roads Organization. Their dedication ensures that the pass, often battered by extreme weather conditions, continues to serve as a crucial artery for India’s strategic and logistical needs in the northernmost region.
